This mud-like coffee playdough also doubles as a fun sensory activity! The best part is, it is super easy to make and only takes a few simple ingredients to make.
Mud Coffee Playdough
This post is in honor of International Mud Day… whoever made the last Wednesday of June “mud-day” does not live in Texas.
The heat index was 107 yesterday and it’s dry, very dry… while we LOVE mud and LOVE playing outside. T
his is just not the time of year for outdoor play (well, after 8:30 in the morning. Our neighbors must love us).
So we decided to bring our love of mud inside in the form of playdough, yummy smelling coffee playdough. I wake up just sniffing this stuff!

Ingredients Needed For Coffee PlayDough Recipe
This recipe was adapted from the basic playdough recipe found on Anna’s site, The Imagination Tree.

How To Make Mud-Like Coffee Playdough:

Step 1
If you are not using glycerin drops, shave a small amount of glycerin soap base and heat until it is melted. Let it cool to warm before adding.
Step 2
Mix flour, cream of tartar, salt, instant coffee, and coffee grounds together in one bowl.
Step 3
Add the hot water, the glycerin, and oil in.
Step 4
Mix well until you get a pasty consistency.

Step 5
Put in a container and add dinosaurs and other toys! Enjoy!
Notes:
Anna also called for glycerin drops. We didn’t have any “drops” but I shaved a tiny piece off of a bar of soap. Glycerin Soap bars are the clear or see-through kind. A little bit goes a long way.
How To Store Your Mud Coffee Playdough:
The oil should keep your mud coffee playdough moist. However, you will probably want to keep this in an air tight container.
Not only will it help keep it wet and malleable, but it will help keep other stuff out like lint or hair and the such.
Materials
- 2 Cups of Flour
- 1/2 Cup of Coffee Grounds
- 1 Tablespoon of Instant Coffee (when it wasn’t dark enough)
- 1 Cup of Salt
- 2 Teaspoons of Cream of Tartar (she called for more, but this stuff is hard to find, so I cut the amount by a third).
- 1 Cup of very hot water
- 2 Tablespoons of oil
- Glycerin Drops or Clear Glycerin Soap
